Soho Serenity Theme

May I present the newest offering…

It’s a Multi Column (1 sidebar, 2 main content colums, 2 right hand sections and 3 footer sections all widgetized) fixed width theme loosely inspired by the art galleries of Soho New York and is perfect for a showcase/portfolio or scrapbook type site. It features an author info page and gravatars along with Custom Archives, Sitemap, Blog Post and full width No Sidebars page templates. Tested in Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE6 and IE7. Compatible up to WordPress 2.7 and is XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS 2.1 valid right out of the box.

Demo & Download

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> index.php and find these lines (there are 2 sets – 1 for the left column and 1 for the right column):

php query_posts(‘cat=1&showposts=3′);
php $posts = get_posts(‘category=1&numberposts=3&offset=0′);

Change the category ID number (in 2 places) to the category you want to display. You can also change the number of posts that are shown (also in 2 places) although for asthetics 3 in the left column and 2 in the right column is recommended.

2. To change the headings of the main content columns go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> index.php and find this line (2 places) and change the text between the < h3>< /h3> tags:
< div class="title">< h3>HEADING< /h3>< /div>

3. To have the images show up in the left hand content column you’ll need to install the Get The Image plugin created by Justin Tadlock. You can download it here: Get The Image.

    I’m experimenting with it now and have been trying to figure out why my subpages don’t appear off the items in the horizontal menu at the top of the front page.
    Will the theme handle them?

    Thank you for all your hard work. I am not familiar with php, and don’t need to use the showcase column….how do I move the left column to the right and use the whole space, like you did on the home page? Also, can I change the background color?

    Thank you Mina for your last reply…I work all day at my computer, then work all night as well…so I get ya!
    I am using both columns quite nicely…so appreciate your answer above, but your layout is quite nice, so went with it.
    My next question…now that I am getting warmed up…. is that I want to put a flash xml video gallery on a new page that uses menu.xml, and data.xml. Is this even possible on a blog site? If so, where would the supporting files live?

    Hello Mina,
    Ok, stuck again. I’d like to have the home page be my static page, and another page be my posts page. I’ve located the Setting>Reading>to change the to static page, but the front page doesn’t have a dropdown so it doesn’t select anything…can’t name it as then it would be its own page…doesn’t make sense. Also if I select on the post to publish only to front page…it doesn’t listen here either and posts it on my ‘post’ page as well.
    I’d like to use the 3 showcase and descriptions as a menu, so do not want new post adding to the set items.
    Another subject, if I use the blog.php page, it posts all my posts including the bio and misc widgets in the middle column…why would it throw the widgets in there?

    And finally, I hope I’ve not gone over my bounds on requests, I cannot find previous comments…shows 22, but no link to view them.
    Thank you for your help…I’ll be happy after this! :)

    Hi Mina! I love this theme and believe me I have tried many. I am having the same problem on the Blog page. My bio and mis are at the bottom, It’s like it is bumped somehow like there is not room for it to fit. It isn’t in the footer, just the bottom of the post.     Hi Mina, I’m new to WP and blogging. I also love this theme. I have what I know is a very simple question. How do I add content in “About the author” and the “Welcome to our site?” Also how would I make a static page title a link. For instance, if Home was a link and when clicked on it would take you to my other site. I’m sorry, one last question, I don’t seem to be able to activate the calendar.

    The content for the About The Author section comes from your blog’s profile. Go to Admin >> Users >> Your Profile and scroll down to the section titled Biographical Info. Whatever you put in that box is what will show, just stay within the tags.

    To edit the Welcome to our site section go to Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >>misc.php and edit the text to add your own.

    Where am I to find this information in wordpress, /blog/wp-admin or in my cpanel in my hosting account? do I go to the sitmap? I’m not at this and I love the themes you offer but I’m confused. Nothing new on my part.

    Followed your direction re: the Author Section and the information that I’m putting in the biographical info is not showing up. I update profile and nothing. The welcome to our site is working fine, no problem.

    Is there a way to add a image in the author section instead of an Avatar? Update,

    When I go into edit theme, bio.php and add my info it works, but not from the bio profile.

    No I did not edit the bio. php before adding the bio. info. What I did was added info in bio. info several times and nothing happened. I then went into bio. php and added info between p /p that is what is there now. Still no calendar.     Hi, Mina.

    I contacted you a week ago or so via email about the Soho theme. I finally got my “disappearing/reappearing” theme issue fixed. I have a fairly good handle on most of the functionality of the theme but the one thing that has me scratching my head is why my posts don’t show up under the Current News header.

    The post titles show up in the footer under the Recent Posts section but not in the Current News section as in the theme preview. Any ideas?

    I am so new to website design, that I’d love to get your help on a couple of things. I can ask my friend who set it up for me with wordpress and all, but I don’t want to wear out my welcome, so to speak. I just this website last month. I liked your theme best, the colors and the style. However, I can’t seem to find showcase page or how to set it up like your demo page. I also can’t seem to find the area to change the avatar. I’d rather have a picture of myself or something different. I think I can find some of this on wordpress, but I have to watch more youtube-how to do it informational videos.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    This theme is really amazing. For people who have a just a moderate amount of tinkering ability like myself, this theme is really easy to adjust to just about anything you might want to do with it (although I haven’t really done much, yet). Especially thoughtful were the inclusions of a “blog” page template and a template with no sidebars. I also like that you’ve set up ready made archive pages that will be easy to copy and modify.

    That makes total sense now. I (think) I have it up and running just fine now. Got my gravatar setup and working, figured out how to work with the images, and I even put in a gallery.     Mick,

    The theme does handle subpages in the menu bar…just not very well I’m afraid. It most likely just needs some css tweaking to behave.

    To get the subs to show go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> menu.php and and find these lines:

    < ?php wp_page_menu ('show_home=1&depth=1&title_li='); ?>

    < ?php wp_list_pages('depth=1&title_li='); ?>

    Change depth=1 to depth=0 and the subpages will show in the menubar but as I said it’s needs a little tweaking.

    As I said earlier, it most likely needs some tweaks to the css for Horizontal Menu. This isn’t one of the things I have a ready answer for I’m afraid. I can try to figure it out but it won’t be right away…Monday thru Fridays are short on free time unfortunately. :(

    Joni,

    This theme comes with a custom page template called blog.php. Just create a new page (don’t add any text) and then under Attributes >> Templates choose Blog and save the page.

    Then go into Settings >> Reading and under Front Page Displays select A Static Page and in the dropdown box choose the new page you just created. I know this sounds like a lot but it’s much easier than messing with the code to accomplish what you want.

    As for the background color go into Appearances >> Editor >> style.css and find this line:

    body { margin: 0; font-size: 77%; background: #3f464f; color: #65503e; } and change background: #3f464f; to whatever color you want.

    For this video question…not to give you a short answer but I don’t know how it would work.

    Have you checked to see if there is a plugin that would do this? Good ones would take care of all the issues that go along with something like this.

    To use a static page (and have options to chose from in the dropdown) you have to create a new page and name it, that’s just the way it works. You could go into the menu codes and tell it to exclude those page id’s from showing in your navigation lists.

    As for the posts that are posted only to the front page showing elsewhere are you referring to the ‘sticky post’ function? If so then it will also post in the posts page as it’s a post (if that makes sense). As far as I know that’s how it’s setup in wordpress. Or am I totally misunderstanding you?

    To use the Showcase section as a menu you could create a new category just for that, so only posts in that category will show there.

    I’m not sure why it’s posting the bio and misc widgets as posts. Can you give me a link to your site so I can see what’s going on? If you don’t want to post it publically you can email it to me but I really need to see what’s what to try and figure it out.

    The link to view older comments should be right above “Leave A Reply” (after the last comment). It should say “Older Comments”.

    Okay I get it now. From Joni’s post I was thinking the bio and misc content was showing up as posts. Sometimes I’m not too bright I think. :D

    I’m trying to recreate this on my setup and so far not having any luck. Are you using widgets in those 2 side sections and if so what ones? Also what plugins are you using?

    Sometimes plugins can cause some wonky things, try deactivating them and see if it clears up. Then reactivate them one by one to see which one may cause the problem to occur again.

    I’m not sure what you did but “Thank You”. It looks perfect now. I have to say, I have been through a lot of themes and yours is the only one that cooperates with IE7 and Mozilla. And the Sitemap works great with Google Webmaster Tools. Thank you again for the great theme and for fixing the Home page on my blog. :)

    When you create a new page it’s title automatically become a link found in the menubar and the Pages listings in the sidebar. If you want to link to an outside site you can use the Blogroll section.

    I’m not quite sure what you mean by “activating” the calendar. There isn’t anything to do, it’s only purpose is to provide day specific access to posts.

    That is your wordpress admin screen also known as the Dashboard. When you login it should take you right to it. Then the options I mentioned (Users, Appearances, etc) will be down the left hand side.

    That is very strange…did you edit bio.php before adding the biographical info? The code in bio.php is what pulls that information for your profile.

    Yes there is a way to add an image instead of a gravatar. But first decide if you want to leave it so you have to edit bio.php or have it pull from the profile. Then we’ll add an image instead of the gravatar.

    I’m still only seeing 1 post that is in all the categories.

    Okay, the way the theme was setup was to have 1 category for the left hand side and 1 category for the right hand side. So if you want your posts to be in multiple categories and to show up on both sides you have to add the other category id’s into the code like this:

    php query_posts(‘cat=1,2,3&showposts=3′);
    php $posts = get_posts(‘category=1,2,3&numberposts=3
    &offset=0′);

    See if that works.

    It seems as if you have posts in the middle left column (with the thumbnail images), and “Current News” in the middle right column (which appear to be different than the “normal” posts.

    How did you achieve that? I’d love to know how to do that on top of the other tip you just shared with me

    Liz,

    There is no “showcase” page per se, that is just a section of the main page. To set it up like my demo you need to follow the installation instructions that are in the readme.txt file that was included with the theme or just scroll up to the top of this page and the instructions are in the first post.

    As for the avatar, if you sign up for an account at http://www.gravatar.com using the same email address you use in your profile on your blog. Once there just follow the instructions on how to upload your image and that will show on your site.

    Sure thing… If you look at the link to your demo, you’ll notice that under the Showcase column with the thumbnail pictures, the thumbs link to the following posts: “Enough”, “Some More News”, and “Whatever”.

    However, under the Current News column, the two posts “More Information” and “Hello World” are from your Archives… Ah… I think I just answered my own question! “Showcase” has your February 2009 posts, Current News has your September posts.

    How did you “split” the display between the two months (one column for Feb. one for Sept.?). Is that the same kind of setting you posted for me previously? Thanks again!

    I just set it up the way I told you to. The Current News section of the demo has posts from September because that is when I set the demo site up. The Showcase posts are newer because I added them specifically to demo this theme which was done in February.

    So nothing special was done to my demo site.
