Misanthropic Realm Theme

A pretty ambitious theme, at least for me. It’s a 6 Column consisting of the main content, 2 sidebars and 3 footer sections, widget-ready fixed width theme with minimal images for fast loading and easy customization featuring an author box, author info page, gravatars and highlighted author comments in the comments section along with Custom Archives, Custom Intro Box, Sitemap and full width No Sidebars page templates. Tested in Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE6 and IE7.

I am using the theme for my blog, but can’t seem to figure out how to utilize the intro area. Any help would be appreciated. I think the theme is great.

  15. Mina says:

I’m glad you like it. :)

Just go into Admin >> Appearances >> Editor >> intro.php and edit to add whatever you want there.

  16. Rumplestiltskin says:

If you edit the .header section of the stylesheet and add transparent in place of #600000 the background image will appear behind the name of the Blog. Not a big change.

Very nice and well written theme.

    Thank you.

  17. Mina says:

You’re absolutely right. You could also delete the background: #600000; part completely to the same effect.

You know the funny thing is that when I did it that way I had a very specific reason but now for the life of me I can’t remember what that reason was. :D

And thank you for pointing that out.

  18. Caldo says:

Do I need to change the file permission in orde to modify the intro?

  19. Bastou says:

    Hi there,
I’m using the misanthropic realm theme on my new site, just about to be released. I love it and was able to modify it a bit to suit my needs.
However on the category and tag pages some coding shows up. You can check it out here:
Could you help me to fix that?
p.s. website in French but shouldn’t be a problem for you to figure out what I mean…

  20. Mina says:

Caldo – You shouldn’t need to. Are you being denied permission to edit?

Bastou – That’s a glitch related to the translation files. I am emailing you a modified file that will take care of this.

  21. Bastou says:

    It worked great!
    Thank you for your help!

  22. Bastou says:

There is something else that doesn’t seem to work. Not sure if it’s related to the theme. Forgive me if it’s not.
I can’t get the posts to only show the short version. it is checked as short in wp but does not show up on the page.
    Can you help?

  23. Mina says:

If you want the post on the front page to only show excerpts, go into index.php and look for this line:

    < ?php the_content(); ?> and change it to < ?php the_excerpt(); ?>.

This can also be done on single.php, archive.php and archives.php.

  24. Caldo says:

This is the message that I am getting just below the box.

You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information

    Thanks for any help

  25. Mina says:

Is that the only file you’re having trouble with?

All you need to do is to change the permissions. And honestly the Codex is a great resource – http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

The explanations there are pretty detailed.

  26. Caldo says:

Thanks, it’s the only file that I have tried to modify. In reading the codex, it looks like I need to modify the permission code outside of the blog and then upload theme with the modified files. Is that correct.

  27. Bastou says:

it does not seem to be working. It shows the code I changed in the post.
The archive files are already showing excerpts and are fine.
I left it like that if you want to check it out…

  28. Mina says:

Caldo – I personally have never changed permissions before uploading, always after. So do it just like in the section titled “Using an FTP Client”. Using your ftp program, log into your server and then go into the themes directory. Right click on that file and select file attributes or permissions or something to that effect depending on which ftp program you’re using. Then change the permissions according to what the Codex page says.

Bastou – It looks like you have a space between the first < and the ?php. Take that space out and it should work..

  29. Bastou says:

    It worked great, thank you!

  30. Bastou says:

    Last question (I think!) :)
The excerpts don’t show the links in the text. They work only in the full version. How can I have them show in the short version?

  31. Mina says:

I don’t know for sure if they can. I know images don’t show either. I haven’t delved that deeply into the workings of excerpts but think it’s something I’ll have to do. But I can’t get to it right away.

As of right now though, I don’t know. :(

  32. Bastou says:

    Not a very big deal!
Thank you for your help and your theme! :)

  33. Bastou says:

Hi, could you tell me how to show the pages in the sidebar in the numbered order specified in the edit/page?

  34. Estetik says:

Do I need to change the file permission in orde to modify the intro?

  35. Mike says:

I am working with your Misanthropic Theme and am having trouble editing category (post/link?) drop down boxes on the left hand side of the page. I set them up and am now trying to delete them. I cannot figure out how to change this. Help! Thanks.

  36. Kelcey says:

i love your themes, it’s really easy to use, thanks for providing such. make some more. :)

  37. Money Maker says:

amazing theme。i will try it on my blog

  38. Mina says:

This is a question I’ve been asked several times in emails, so now that it’s been asked here I think it’s a good time to address it for you Bastou and others with the same question. Now let’s see if I can do this without too much of my rambling. :D

To utilize the page order function in WordPress you need to reorder ALL the pages not just some. So for instance if you have 10 pages and want your ‘About’ page to be number 7 you can’t just make that page number 7, you have to number the other pages also 1-6 and 8-10.

And also when numbering the pages keep in mind that as you number them they automatically go down to the bottom of the list. So page 1 will go last, page 2 under that, page 3 under that one and so on until they are all numbered.

And lastly, if things aren’t going exactly as they should remember that the WordPress gurus themselves have said about this function:

We know this is a little janky, it’ll be better in future releases.

I know I sometimes confuse things more when I explain, so if you still aren’t sure just ask and I’ll try again.

(YAY, the first time I’ve used the new reply function…and it worked!)

  39. Bastou says:

Thanks for your reply! Actually I already have my pages numbered and showing well in the top menu. However they are in alphabetical order in the sidebar. How can I change that? You can see what I mean here: http://permaculturefrancophone.org/

  40. Mina says:

Using the numbering section in the edit posts should also reorder the sidebar pages. This is very weird because when I renumber the pages on my setup they are reordered in the sidebar only and NOT in the top menu.

Are you using widgets in the sidebar? If so go into the widget page and click edit on the Pages widget and you’ll see a dropdown box titled “Sort By” and the options are: ‘Page Title’, ‘Page Order’ or ‘Page ID’. Pick page order and hopefully that will take care of that.

And if you are not using widgets in the sidebar, can you email a copy of your right_sidebar.php to admin@the-cloisters.net?

  41. Mina says:

You shouldn’t have to but if you’re having trouble making changes you may need to.

I’m referring you to this article on the Codex is a great resource – http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

    It explains things well.

  42. Mina says:

It’s hard to tell from your source code exactly HOW you set them up (you don’t say). It almost looks like a plugin of some sort or you’re using widgets.

If you’re using a plugin, deactivate it. I can’t really help more than that with a plugin since I don’t know what plugin it is (if it is).

If it a widget then go back into the widget section and under “Current Widgets” click the edit link (on the right hand side) and deselect ‘show as dropdown’.

  43. Mike says:

You beat me to the punch – it was a widget. I’m a Newbie and am figuring out some things the hard way. I appreciate your prompt response. I’m really digging this theme too. Thanks!
